Worth & Mainbocher at MCNY

April 12th, 2012

It’s wonderful that the Museum of the City of NY has created an online exhibition of two of their large collections of couture.  Its a very ambitious and large undertaking – I would have loved to see the whole process. (Which was open to the public – so now I am on another mailing list!  I don’t want to miss the next time)

I was very lucky to see the Worth Collection the first time it was exhibited in it’s entirety -  (too many years ago)  and I mostly love what they have done with it online.  Beautiful photography and very detailed descriptions,  so much work went into this presentation,  which is nice and cleanly designed to highlight the clothes.

I am frustrated though,  Because I want to see the images bigger on the site!  They have done such an incredible job,  displaying & shooting everything, including many beautiful  (but tiny)  detail shots -  Why, oh why are the images so small?  The workmanship and detail of these garments is so incredible – I think most everybody would want to get up right close!  The internet is such a perfect medium for this  &  you’d  never get that opportunity in a museum.

Turns out the details shots are actually bigger than they appear on the MCNY site:

Forget my frustration – what MCNY has done is fabulous & I expect as they continue exhibits will only get better and better.

(This stuff is my version of internet cats!)
